Last updated: January 2026

1. Overview

Ahlan takes call recording and privacy seriously. This policy explains:

  • How Ahlan stores and encrypts calls
  • Your rights to record calls on Ahlan
  • Legal requirements by jurisdiction
  • Consequences of unauthorized recording
  • How to report violations

2. Ahlan's Default Behavior

NOT Recorded by Ahlan

Video and audio calls are NOT automatically recorded or stored by Ahlan servers

End-to-End Encrypted

All calls use end-to-end encryption. We cannot access call content even if we wanted to.

Metadata Only

We only store: call duration, participants, timestamp, and connection quality data

3. User Recording Rights

You may use your device's built-in recording features (screen record, voice memos) to record calls, BUT you must follow local laws.

Two-Party Consent Jurisdictions

These areas REQUIRE consent from ALL parties before recording:

  • US States:
  • • California • Florida • Illinois • Maryland • Massachusetts • Michigan • Montana • Nevada • New Hampshire • Pennsylvania • Tennessee • Washington
  • International:
  • • Germany • France • Canada (varies) • Australia (varies)

Penalty: Up to $5,000 per violation in some states + possible criminal charges

One-Party Consent Jurisdictions

These areas allow recording if at least ONE party consents (usually the person doing the recording):

  • • Most US states (except those listed above)
  • • UK, Ireland, and most of Western Europe
  • • Australia (with restrictions)
  • • Singapore, India, Japan

4. Your Obligations as a User

Before Recording:

Know the laws in YOUR jurisdiction and all participants' locations

Get Consent:

Explicitly inform all participants that you will record the call (especially in two-party consent states)

Storage:

Store recordings securely and ensure they comply with data protection laws (GDPR, CCPA, etc.)

Usage:

Only use recordings for lawful purposes (not sale, distribution, or use in court without proper authorization)

5. Recording Indicators

We recommend:

  • Using your device's built-in recording indicator (red dot on iPhone, etc.)
  • Telling the other person out loud that you're recording
  • Requesting written consent before recording business/legal calls
  • Saving consent confirmation messages for your records

6. Ahlan's Liability Limitation

Ahlan is not responsible for:

  • • Your violation of recording laws
  • • Lawsuits or fines resulting from illegal recording
  • • Disputes between participants about consent
  • • Loss of recorded files stored on your device

By using Ahlan, you agree that you alone are responsible for complying with all recording, consent, and privacy laws in your jurisdiction.

7. Reporting Violations

If you believe someone has illegally recorded a call on Ahlan:

1. Report to Ahlan: ahlandev@ahlantranslationapp.com (we will investigate)

2. Gather Evidence: Screenshots, timestamps, participant info

3. Contact Local Authorities: Police, FBI (if cross-border), or privacy commissioner

4. Consult Attorney: Consider legal action for damages
